Fairytale laser-lit igloos are hewn from ice blocks at -50°c (-58°f ) |
With its snow-covered landscape of frosted pine
trees. frozen rivers and icicles, Lapland is the
quintessential winter wonderland where sub-zero
temperatures shiver as low as -50°C (-58°F). Under
the eerie glow of Sweden’s polar skies, the Ice
Hotel is a giant magical igloo built each November
from ice blocks taken from the frozen Tome River.
Hand-crafted ice pillars and ice-hewn furniture are
strung together with glowing fibre optic cables. The
ethereal northern lights can also been seen in this
luminescent location 160 km (1oo miles) above the
Arctic Circle. Make full use of the skis, sleighs and
dog-sleds to explore Lapland’s reindeer trails and
icy wilds. After several warming drinks from the Absolute lce Bar spend a night snuggled into a
thermal sleeping bag under reindeer-skin rugs.
Guests are awarded a certificate after surviving
plummeting temperatures and are encouraged to
thaw out in a pre~breakfast sauna. The beauty, the
cold and the quick morning escape are all part of
the fun. Come May, or earlier (should there be an
unforeseen heat-wave) the walls begin to melt -
and that is it for the Ice Hotel until it is time to
rebuild the following year.
