Night Diving in the Red Sea - Egypt (Asia)
Senses sharpen when diving at night and nocturnal marine life emerges

The vibrant underwater world of Egypt's Red Sea coast looks very different once the Sun goes down and nocturnal marine life emerges from daytime nooks and crannies. Diving at night requires a period of adjustment so eyes become accustomed to the shadows and senses sharpen, guided by strobe-illuminated marker buoys and chemical light sticks. Crimsons, yellows and oranges in particular appear more intense against the darkness.

From Wadi Lahami over so different offshore dive sites can be reached. Dive into translucent depths rich in swim-troughs, tunnels, arches, caves and caverns. Octopi unravel in space-like slow-motion and groups of twinkling minute organisms add fairy-dust to the sea. Many species of crustaceans and mollusks use the night hours to feed - as do their predators - out it pays not to he overly-scared of what might be lurking beyond the dive light's beam. Just point it in an interesting looking area and take the time to examine it inch-by-inch whilst revealing in the increased activity on the reefs in the night-time glow.

Located to the north of the mountain giants of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna, the Kingdom of Mustang is north of the main Himalayan range and geographically part of the highlands of Tibet. Trails are open to a few select trekking groups each season and wriggle through white-washed villages on an ancient trade route set amid barley fields, Buddhist monasteries, deep ravines and rocky ledges.Visit between April - May.

Swim among jellyfish illuminated by spectacular shafts of light
Jellyfish Lake is one of around 70 marine lakes scattered throughout a limestone archipelago in the Pacific pockmarked with sink-holes and porous with caves and tunnels cut by flowing fresh water during past ice ages, Ongeim’l Tketau can only be accessed by traversing a ridge that separates the lake from the surrounding lagoon. Rope guides highlight the path and provide added stability on a rocky jungle terrain rich in lizards, snakes and birds. Climb onto a mossy wooden dock to look out onto waters filled with 1o-million golden jellyfish that follow the path of the sun as it crosses the lake.

Sunlight is an essential element in the lives of the golden jellyfish, which derive their colour and much of their energy from intracellular algae. as the rises, the jellyfish begin their migration in the western basin, where they overnight to reach the furthest illuminated edges of the eastern basin by mid-morning. They then reverse their course to return to the western basin by mid-aafternoonto complete 1 km (0.6 mile) trip that keeps them in the sun and away from the predatory anemone in the dark edges of the lake. Thousands of visitors arrive Ongeim'l Tketau to swim among the jellyfish, sponges, sea squirts, mussels, anemones, and algae  spectacularly illuminated by the beams of sunlight. Contrary to popular belief, the jellyfish aren't “stingless” but their stinging cells (nematocysts) are so tiny that the sting is almost impossible to detect. Avoid touching the jellyfish, as this can damage them.

An eerie wind-blown melody fills the dunes of the Gobi desert

The Khongory Els (meaning ‘Singing Sands’ on account of the noise made by the wind as passes across the dunes, causing the rounded grains to rub against each other) extends for 185 km (115 miles) across the southern Gobi Desert between Mounts Sevrei and Zuulun. Descriptions of the sand’s musical qualities range from a gentle, low, deep hum to a high pitched operatic-style shriek and crescendo-roar with the outer layer of undulating dunes acting as a giant amplifier. Songs can last for a few seconds or continue for minutes if not hours. To enjoy the eerie wind-blown melodies of Kongory Els - and not get toasted by searing heat - visit the Gobi Desert September to october. From late October, the climate is unpredictable and prone to extremes, including sudden snowstorms and extreme cold. Locals consider April and May the worst-weather months.

Marvel at China's wonder-packed, snow-frosted 'Ice City'
5th January

Snow-frosted sculptures depict scenes from traditional Chinese fairytales while fairy-light twinkle around ice-carved lions, tigers and dragons - a striking winter spectacular in temperatures that can drop to -38 C(-36 F).
