Straddle the equator to revel in the first new year in the world's time zone |
The 33 atolls of Kiribati are mere pinpricks in the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean where islander live on coconuts, breadfruit and fish in mud-and-thatch huts just they have done for centuries past. Yet the Republic of Kiribati (Pronounced 'Kiri-bas') boasts a great claim to fame as the nation that straddles the equator and is therefore the first nation on Earth to celebrate New Year's Day. Kiribati's capital Tarawa sits about half-way between Hawaii and Australia at GMT +12. A unilateral adjustment in 1995 enabled the entire country to keep to the same time zone.
