Ancient Turkic originated the spectacle of came wrestling though, today, its owes more to comedy than sport. A succession of prized bull camels are paraded through Selcuk in elaborate saddles with golden bells on their humps, bejewelled blankets across their flanks and tails woven with colourful pompoms. Winter is the mating season - the only time in Turkey's camels tussle in order to win the right to available females. Most settle for the half-hearted succession of butts and shoulder-to-shoulder nudges. Others rampage through the crowds, scattering 25,000 spectators across the makeshift arena in a frenzy of high excitement.
