Venna's streetscape is enlived by fairy-light, candles and roasting chestnuts |
At the onset of Advent, Vienna's "Christkindlmarkte"
(Christmas Markets) begin spreading across the city's
snow-chilled streets amidst steaming spiced wine
stalls andWUrstelstand (sausage vendors). A
centuries-old tradition since Emperor Albrecht I granted a 'Dezembermarkt' (December market) in
1296, the markets attract festive shoppers in their
droves. Choose from a wide range of handicrafts, candied fruit, pastries and roasted chestnuts. Fairy lights and Christmas
trees decorate every square with traditional carols sung by Sunday choirs at venues city-wide.
