20th January
As the longest-running event in the world rally sport, the four-day Rallye Automobile Monte Carlo traces its root to 1911. These days very little of the event is based in Monte Carlo, with most the rally based hundreds of kilometres away in Valence. Perilous asphalt mountain paths are made even more treacherous by a trick mix of weather and loose rocks. Stages are also run in darkness where cold temperature ensure skiddy icy patches and freezing fog.
